1. A Note from the Publisher

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The need for ESL teachers in Asia is chronic. You have only to look at some of the ESL web sites to see how many hundreds of opportunities are out there. With the cooler weather just around the corner in North America, you could help out - and if you choose a country like Taiwan or Thailand, spend the winter in a warm clime. Teach and Beach! Great idea?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

2. What Degree do I Need to Teach Overseas?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Unless you are specifically targeting a university position,

the main qualification is that you have 'a' degree of some

kind. If you do not have one, then you may be able to get by

on a TESOL certificate - depending on the country. Having

both is ideal and will open more doors. Naturally if you are

in competition with one or more candidates for the same

position, the one with the highest degree will get the job. Asian

countries are very big on degrees!

A teacher's license is not required for most schools - except

for some international schools. These pay more and expect teacher qualifications from your home state or province.

3. Tips for Teachers: Use an Overhead Projector

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This may sound like a 'gimme' but experience tells us it is not

so. You would be surprised at the number of teachers who do not take advantage of this easy-to-use resource. For teachers who teach the same subject to more than one class, it makes sense to have your lesson on an overhead sheet rather than having to copy it out on the whiteboard for each class. Of course, if you have a notebook computer and are lucky enough to teach in a school with a Data Monitor, this is even better. Unless they are in a remote village without electricity, most schools in developing countries have at least one overhead around.

We're still building this so if you know of anyone else who is interested in teaching, please tell them about our database.

6. Lesson Plan - Story Telling

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Educators have long known that the arts can contribute to student academic success and emotional well being. The ancient art of storytelling is especially well suited for student exploration. As a folk art, storytelling is accessible to all ages and abilities.

No special equipment beyond the imagination and the power of listening and speaking is needed to create artistic images.

As a learning tool, storytelling can encourage students to explore their unique expressiveness and can heighten a student's ability to communicate thoughts and feelings in an articulate, lucid manner. These benefits transcend the art experience to support daily life skills. In our fast-paced, media-driven world, storytelling can be a nurturing way to remind children that their spoken words are powerful, that listening is important, and that clear communication between people is an art.
