3. Tips for Teachers: Teaching Fairs
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Not sure where you want to teach? You might consider going
to one of the teaching fairs held around the world. There
are a couple in Canada including one at Queen's University
in Kingston, several in the US and at least one in Europe.
We know of one person who was looking for a career change.
He was unsure about taking a TESOL Course but did. His instructor then suggested that he go to a teaching fair and
he chose to attend one in France. The very first school
booth he visited was from Saudi Arabia. He was contracted
at $4,000 US to teach about 16 hours a week. Shortly after
he arrived and began teaching, he was approached by the
father of one of his students. This man was looking for a
private tutor for his family 10 hours a week and was willing
to pay $100 US per hour. Do the math! Granted this is an exception rather than the rule but it demonstrates the possibilities. Private tutoring is a BIG TICKET!

4. What Qualities do Schools Look for in a New Teacher?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Common elements: enthusiasm about teaching; willingness to
keep teaching methods current; knowledge of newest methods
and issues; understanding of the needs of special populations; willingness to take on extra duties; voice quality (Do you
speak clearly and distinctly? Will the students be able to
hear and understand you?); ability to reach each and every student; ability to articulate your positions on discipline, curriculum, teaching philosophy, etc.; and a million
intangibles, such as ability to fit in with the rest of the staff.
