1. A Note from the Publisher

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This is the time of year when we reflect on what we have accomplished over the past year and what we intend to accomplish this year. New Year's Resolutions! Ask yourself "Am I doing what I want to do? Am I having fun in my work? Am I still learning?

Is there something that you really want to do? Why not make the decision to DO IT this year? Take a new course (hopefully ours), learn something new, challenge yourself a little. Get out of your comfort zone.

2. Exploring Multiple Intelligences

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

ONE OF THE MOST COMPELLING, yet controversial new approaches to education reform is Multiple Intelligences Theory, or MI. Conceived of by Howard Gardner of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Project Zero, MI first swept the worlds of education, cognitive science and developmental psychology in 1983 with the publication of Gardner's treatise, Frames of Mind. In the decade since Frames, the work of Dr. Gardner and MI theory has shaken educators with

a most fundamental question: What is intelligence?

MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES theory, in a nutshell, is a pluralized way of understanding the intellect. Recent advances in cognitive science, developmental psychology and neuroscience suggest that each person's level of intelligence, as it has been traditionally considered, is actually made up of autonomous faculties that can work individually or in concert with other faculties. Howard Gardner originally identified seven such faculties, which he labeled as "intelligences":

Musical Intelligence

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

Linguistic Intelligence

Spatial Intelligence

Interpersonal Intelligence

Intrapersonal Intelligence

Gardner has never ruled out the possibility that additional intelligences may also exist, for MI research is still in its infancy. Recently, he added an eighth intelligence to the list: the Naturalist Intelligence. There's also been some consideration of a ninth intelligence - existential intelligence - but the jury is still out on that one. Besides, for now at least, a great deal of new understanding may be found from within these eight faculties.

To read more about Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory, go to < http://edweb.gsn.org/edref.mi.intro.html> or just go to Yahoo and key "Multiple Intelligences" into the search box (Don't forget the quotation marks)

3. Tips for Teachers: Colored Markers

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

When you write something on the whiteboard, try to use different colored markers for emphasis. This helps to stimulate the brain and aids it to sort the new information more easily. Color also helps to focus students' attention.

For more information on how the brain works. go to the page of 'Recommended Books' on our web site. We refer there to a Tony Buzan book called "Using Both Sides of Your Brain". You can order it directly from Amazon through our site.

4. Develop a Love of Reading in your Students

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Reading is the best way there is to increase vocabulary. All students should be encouraged to 'develop a love of reading'. This is one of the best things you will ever do for your students. Many are reluctant because reading English can be difficult depending on what they read. In addition to developing vocabulary, reading teaches how different people think and how they write. The more students read, the better their writing skills will get. Read a short passage to your students that is full of descriptive words. Take a few minutes to discuss it.

Give your students something to read every day - something that they will understand most of but which will challenge them at the same time with a few new words. If they learn three new words a day, that is about 1000 words in one year. Imagine how much better they will do if they have 1000 more words in their vocabulary and know how to use them!

5. Lesson Plan: Using Music in the Classroom

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Remember when you were a teenager, trying to decipher the words to your favorite songs and writing them out from the radio, tape or CD? Children today, especially teens are no different. They love music and they want the words to the songs they like so they can sing along. Start with an easy song such as 'Love Me Tender' by Elvis. It is easy to understand. Play it over and over and have students transcribe what they hear. You can also write it on the board. The song may have to be played several times to get it right. When you have all he words written downm the class can then sing along with the tape.

HINT: Try to get the words yourself ahead of time.

As an alternative, students could bring in English songs that they like and the class could transcribe those. This is excellent listening practice (with some writing thrown in).
