Lucy Calkins has written
a book with the goal of creating lifelong readers. The
Art of
Teaching
Reading offers educators a multifaceted
reading program supported by word
study, guided reading, book
talks, and other ongoing structures to produce impassioned
readers. Through years of
research, the author provides a myriad of ideas to help young
readers discover their own
joy of reading and love of books.
This text focuses on the
big picture of reading instruction and explores the goals of reading
programs. It also provides
information on comprehending and responding to text through
synthesis, critique, writing,
and other effective strategies for understanding.
For teachers or future teachers
or educators.
We all learn more effectively
when we are enjoying the process. Humor sets a social context
within which most students
feel comfortable and appreciate learning. Loomans and Kolberg
have written the best available
cornucopia of hands-on ideas for applying humor and
easy-to-follow techniques
for increasing the playfulness of teaching. There are warn-ups,
laughing lessons, and play
breaks.
The Laughing Classroom begins
with self-inventories concerning personal uses of humor and
extracts a laughing oath.
There are 30 ideas for fast and fun humor, 25 ways to go the extra
smile, and the ABCs of fun.
Techniques include humorous ways to improve memory, enliven
debates, and promote cooperation.
The authors demonstrate how to use humor in discipline
and ease tension with before
and laughter scenarios.
The format and illustrations
are a joy. The Laughing Classroom is an invaluable resource and
probably a step toward better
mental health for all teachers.

Idioms for Everyday Use

Fundamentals of English
Grammar is a book that every ESL teacher should have in his/her
arsenal. It covers
all aspects of grammar. Besides this textbook, there is a workbook and
a
teacher's book in the series.
All are well worth acquiring. You'll use them over and over.
Fowler's Modern English
Usage or "Fowler's," as it is affectionately called by writers and
Anglophiles, is a generous
dictionary guide to the uses, misuses, and conundrums of English
grammar, spelling, and style.
The third edition updates this classic, pointing out differences
between British and American
English (the original was strictly the King's English), but
continues its tradition
of wit. No other guide makes the split infinitive fun..
Tony Buzan has written a
number of books about how the brain learns. Make the Most of
Your Mind teaches
how to 'turn on' your brain to achieve high-speed problem solving, right
brain logic/left brain creativity,
speed reading and learning, and improved memory. It contains
some good techniques you
can apply to ESL teaching.
Use Both Sides of your
Brain is another Tony Buzan book. He introduces the concept of
Mind-Mapping, applicable
to teaching/learning all subjects. It teaches how to study more
efficiently, increase overall
memory, read faster and how language and imagery can be used for
recording, organizing, remembering,
creative thinking and problem solving.
